Statement from Governor Murphy on Lifting Residency Requirements for New NJ TRANSIT Hires

08/16/2018

“The lack of NJ TRANSIT-certified engineers is a crisis in itself – one that has left countless thousands of commuters stranded by cancelled trains. Hiring new NJ TRANSIT employees, particularly skilled and fully trained engineers, is an absolute necessity to provide reliability and stability to commuters.

“NJ TRANSIT must be given the ability to hire mission essential employees who live in neighboring states so they can be put to work turning around our system. I fully support Executive Director Corbett’s call for NJ TRANSIT to be granted an exemption from the current residency law so they can make these necessary hires.

“I call on Senate President Sweeney and Speaker Coughlin to swiftly send me stand-alone legislation permanently lifting residency requirements for mission essential NJ TRANSIT employees so the agency can adequately staff up and ensure trains are running on schedule.”
