GOVERNOR MURPHY SIGNS LEGISLATION TO PROTECT HOTEL WORKERS

Governor Phil Murphy signed S2986 into law, which will require hotels with over 100 guest rooms to provide panic devices in order to protect hotel employees from violent acts, such as sexual assault and sexual harassment, while performing housekeeping duties.

“We must protect the safety of workers in the hospitality industry,” said Governor Murphy. “This new law will ensure that hotel employees performing their duties will have the means to summon immediate assistance if they are in danger.”

“We are invested in the safety of all New Jersey’s workers, and we applaud the Governor and the legislature for this innovative approach to ensuring no employee is put in a dangerous situation while simply in pursuit of a family-sustaining income,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo.

ACTING GOVERNOR OLIVER DESIGNATES JUNE 12 AS “WOMEN VETERANS APPRECIATION DAY” IN NEW JERSEY

Acting Governor Sheila Oliver signed Senate Joint Resolution No. 114 into law, designating June 12th of each year as “Women Veterans Appreciation Day” in New Jersey. This legislation will honor New Jersey women veterans for their great sacrifices to protect our country. In addition to signing the legislation, Acting Governor Oliver presented Prudential with the “We Value Our Veterans” Community Award for its efforts in supporting veterans. At the federal level, Senator Cory Booker and Representative Mikie Sherrill showed their support for this initiative by introducing a bipartisan resolution designating June 12th as Women Veterans Appreciation Day nationally.

“New Jersey is lucky to be home to many women who have put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms,” said Governor Murphy. “These women have proudly served our nation, and now their extraordinary dedication to our state and country will be commemorated each year.”

“Women have continually protected our rights and liberties throughout the history of the United States,” said Acting Governor Oliver. “We are thrilled to acknowledge the increasing number of women serving in our military, and proud to show our appreciation for the state’s upstanding women veterans.”

MURPHY ADMINISTRATION APPROVES EMERGENT REPAIRS TO CAMDEN’S VETERANS MEMORIAL FAMILY SCHOOL

The New Jersey Department of Education announced it has approved emergent repairs at the Veterans Memorial Family School. The school was considered for closure due to building condition concerns, but will be able to remain open.

The plan for emergent repairs – which responds to input from local parents, students, teachers, and other community stakeholders – involved the collaboration of the Department of Education, state Superintendent Katrina McCombs, and the New Jersey Schools Development Authority.

“It is critical that students across our state are able access a high-quality education,” said Governor  Murphy. “By keeping Veterans Memorial Family School open, we are ensuring continued educational success for students in Camden and keeping a long-standing part of the community open. I am proud that my Administration has worked closely with the city to prevent the closure of this school.”

“This is an example of how officials at all levels, ranging from the Administration in Trenton to local school leaders in Camden, came together to listen to the voices of stakeholders in the community,” said Dr. Lamont O. Repollet, Commissioner of Education

PRIDE FLAG FLIES AT DRUMTHWACKET FOR THE FIRST TIME IN STATE HISTORY FOR THE DURATION OF PRIDE MONTH

For the first time in New Jersey history, Drumthwacket, the Governor’s official residence in Princeton, will fly the Pride flag on its official flagpole for the duration of Pride Month in a show of support for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall riots, one of the most important milestones in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Since Stonewall, the rainbow Pride flag has become an important symbol of LGBTQ+ identity and solidarity.

“It is of the greatest importance that everyone feels accepted in New Jersey, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “I am honored to show support for our LGBTQ+ residents by flying the Pride flag as we celebrate Pride throughout the month of June.”

“We are honored to be able to represent the LGBTQ+ community at Drumthwacket by flying the Pride flag,” said First Lady Tammy Murphy. “We are also excited to continue to work towards a future of tolerance and acceptance for all.”
