Acting Governor Scutari Orders Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of Former Senate Minority Leader James S. Cafiero

08/9/2023

TRENTON – Acting Governor Nick Scutari today ordered that U.S. and New Jersey flags fly at half-staff at all state buildings and facilities on Monday, August 14, 2023, in recognition and remembrance of former Senate Minority Leader James S. Cafiero, who passed away at the age of 94, on August 3, 2023.

“Senator Cafiero was a dedicated and exemplary public servant, who served our state with compassion and commitment across five decades, including in both houses of the Legislature,” said Acting Governor Scutari. “Senator Cafiero fought to lower prices of prescription drugs, protect New Jersey’s environment and children, promote affordability measures, and advance legislation to address stalking and drunk driving. He will be remembered not only for his lifetime of public service, but also for his sense of humor and quick wit, his kindness and altruism, and his ability to work across the aisle to advance the public interest.”

In addition to honoring Senator Cafiero, flags at all state buildings and facilities continue to fly at half-staff in remembrance of Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver from Friday, August 4, 2023, through Monday, September 4, 2023.
