New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's Message to Japan:

The relationship between Japan and New Jersey has never been more important. And there has never been a better time to invest in the future of our partnership

Tokyo, Japan – Governor Phil Murphy, First Lady Tammy Murphy, and the New Jersey delegation arrived in Japan this weekend, kicking off the start of a nine-day Choose New Jersey governor-led economic mission to East Asia. At the outset, Governor Murphy highlighted the vital partnership between New Jersey and Japan.

Governor Murphy, First Lady, and New Jersey Delegation Pay Respect to Hiroshima Victims

Governor Murphy, First Lady Murphy, and the New Jersey Delegation visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum to pay respects and offer prayers for the thousands of people who lost their lives during the World War II bombing of the city. Deputy Director of the Museum Masuhiro Hosoda led the delegation on a tour of the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, where the Governor and First Lady laid a wreath before the Cenotaph for the Victims of the Atomic Bomb to honor those who lost their lives. Governor Murphy spoke about the horrors of World War II and the untold numbers of civilians who were impacted, stating that it’s “our responsibility, today, to maintain peace in this fragile world. We must strengthen the bonds of trust and understanding between our nations, and every nation. And we must work together to build a world that is finally free from the horrors of war.”

Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy Meet Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui

Following the Peace Memorial Park and Museum tour, Governor Murphy met with Hiroshima Mayor Matsui. The Mayor welcomed the New Jersey delegation and discussed how important it is to strengthen economic ties between our two regions. Governor Murphy emphasized that New Jersey is the gateway state for any company or innovator hoping to make its mark in North America. 

Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy Meet with Ryuta Ibaragi, Governor of Okayama Prefecture

Governor Murphy met with Governor Ibaragi to discuss the importance of building bilateral relationships between New Jersey and Japan. Governor Murphy emphasized that partnerships with our friends in Japan have never been more important. 

Rutgers University, RWJBarnabas Health, and Hiroshima University Partner to Strengthen Health Sciences Research

Governor Murphy, joined by Dr. Mitsuo Ochi, President of Hiroshima University, witnessed the signing of a historic Letter of Intent (LOI) between Rutgers University, RWJBarnabas Health, and Hiroshima University, a top public research university in Japan. The LOI creates a joint effort to advance cancer research and education between New Jersey and Japan. An MOU between Rutgers University and Hiroshima University was also signed, deepening the collaboration between both entities in medicine. Governor Murphy remarked that this ceremony “will establish a new, cross-continental partnership, one that will enable our top minds in New Jersey to engage and exchange ideas with researchers in Hiroshima. I am confident that this partnership will lead to important breakthroughs, especially when it comes to caring for cancer patients in New Jersey, Japan, and around the world.”
