Governor Murphy Directs the Lowering of U.S. and New Jersey Flags in Honor of Former Senator and Assemblyman Paul J. Contillo

02/15/2024

TRENTON— Governor Phil Murphy today signed Executive Order No. 355, ordering U.S. and New Jersey flags to fly at half-staff on Friday, February 16, 2024 in recognition and in mourning of former New Jersey Senator and Assemblyman Paul J. Contillo. Senator Contillo passed away at age 94 on Tuesday, February 6, leaving behind his loving children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A resident of Paramus, Senator Contillo served his country in the U.S. Naval Reserve and devoted his decades-long career to serving New Jersey as both an elected official and as a member or chair of several public boards.

"Senator Contillo leaves behind an unrivaled legacy of public service," said Governor Murphy. "He championed critical legislation promoting ethics in government and expanding environmental protections in New Jersey. This is a devastating loss to the state and to the Bergen County community, and we are keeping Senator Contillo's family, friends, and loved ones in our prayers."
